Picking the right advisors, approaching them correctly and making sure they get involved can be challenging and extremely rewarding.

Advisors can help you figure out the things you don't know you don't know - the real killer mistakes that you're not even aware you might be making. And they can give credibility to your company, open doors, and many other benefits.

But most companies don't do a good job of leveraging their advisors value add. Use them frequently or they won't feel involved or even keep up with what you do. Make them feel critical to the team and use them actively to extend your experience pool. But advisors will never add what a critical team member who is involved and therefore literally the thousand small decisions you make every year, often without knowing which one will become critical in five years.
